선형 회귀 분석(Linear regression analysis)은 $x$와 $y$의 값을 알고 있을 때, $y = ax +b$의 꼴에서 $a$와 $b$의 값을 추측하는데 사용하는 방법이다.
데이터 포인트 하나만 가지고는 $a$와 $b$값을 추론할 수 없기 때문에 $x$에 대한 $y$ 데이터가 많이 있을 때 함수 형태가 어떻게 되는지 추론할 때 쓰인다.
데이터의 수가 많기 때문에 아래와 같이 행렬 꼴로 많이 쓰인다.
$$ \mathbf{Y} = a\mathbf{X} + b $$

이 때, $\mathbf{Y} = (y_1, y_2, y_3, \ldots)^\intercal$, $\mathbf{X} = (x_1, x_2, x_3, \ldots)^\intercal$ 이다.

그 중 널리 쓰이는 방법이 최소제곱법(Least-square fitting)이다. 최소제곱법은 데이터로 얻은 $\mathbf{Y}$와 우리가 추론한 함수의 결과인 $f(\mathbf{X})$ 사이의 오차의 제곱을 최소화 하는 함수 $f(x)$를 찾는 방법이다. 즉, 다음의 식에서 $\chi^2$를 최소화하는 함수 $f(x)$를 찾는 것이다.
$$ \chi^2 = \sum_{i=1}^{N}\left(\frac{y_i - f(x_i)}{\sigma_i}\right)^2$$

Python의 경우 scipy의 curve_fitting 함수를 사용할 수 있고, C/C++의 경우 gsl(gnu scientific library)의 gsl_fit_linear 혹은 gsl_fit_wlinear를 사용할 수 있다. 데이터에 표준오차가 포함되어 있는 경우에는 wlinear를, 포함되지 않은 경우에는 linear를 사용한다. wlinear를 쓸 때는 표준오차 값의 제곱의 역수를 w값으로 넣어줘야 한다. gsl의 경우
$$\chi^2 = w(y-f(x))^2;\quad w = \frac{1}{\sigma^2}$$
으로 계산하기 때문이다.

scipy를 쓸 때는 표준오차가 포함되어 있는 경우에는 absolute_sigma 옵션을 True로 줘야 한다.
